How the Running Calorie Calculator Works

This calculator uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) formula: Calories = MET × body weight (kg) × duration (hours). MET is a measure of exercise intensity standardised by sports scientists. Running has a MET range of approximately 8.0 (easy jogging) to 14.0+ (all-out race effort), compared to 1.0 for sitting still.

Duration is derived from your pace and distance. The calorie total is the gross calorie burn — total energy expended including your resting metabolic rate during the run. This is what most apps and heart rate monitors report.

A useful rule of thumb: running burns approximately 1 kcal per kg of body weight per km. A 70 kg runner burns roughly 70 kcal per km at easy pace. This makes distance the primary driver of calorie burn — not speed.

Running faster does increase calorie burn slightly (higher MET), but the effect is smaller than most people expect. Running 10 km at race effort burns about 15–20% more calories than running the same 10 km at easy effort — the larger difference is how long it took you.
