What Is Marathon Pace?

Marathon pace (MP) is the average speed you need to sustain across 42.195 km (26.2 miles) to hit your goal finish time. It's one of the most important numbers in distance running — your entire training plan is structured around it.

For reference, a 4-hour marathon requires a pace of 5:41 per km (9:09 per mile). A 3:30 marathon demands 4:59 per km (8:00 per mile). A sub-3 hour marathon requires holding 4:15 per km (6:51 per mile) for the entire race.

Even Splits vs. Negative Splits

The calculator shows even-split times — running the exact same pace from start to finish. This is a useful baseline, but most coaches recommend negative splits in practice: running the second half 1–3 minutes faster than the first.

The reason is physiological: glycogen stores are depleted gradually, and starting too fast burns through your energy reserves before km 30. Running the first half conservatively gives you a glycogen buffer for the crucial final 12 km.

Pacing Mistakes That Ruin Marathons

The most common marathon pacing mistakes, in order of how often they occur:

  1. Going out too fast in the first 10 km. Race-day adrenaline, crowd energy, and downhill starts make the first 10 km feel easy at a pace that will punish you at km 32. Aim to run the first 5 km 20–30 seconds per km slower than your goal pace.
  2. Skipping nutrition until you feel depleted. By the time you feel the need for a gel, you're already behind. Start fuelling at km 15 and take a gel every 45 minutes regardless of how you feel.
  3. Running long runs too fast. Your long run pace should be 60–90 seconds per km slower than your marathon goal pace. Running faster accumulates fatigue without building additional aerobic fitness.
