How to Convert Running Pace

Treadmill displays and GPS watches often use different units, so a quick conversion keeps your training paces consistent. Once you know your pace, the marathon pace calculator and marathon splits calculator turn it into a full race plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply your pace in min/km by 1.609344 to get min/mile. For example, 5:00 per km is 5 × 1.609344 = 8:03 per mile. To go the other way, divide min/mile by 1.609344.
Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per km. A 5:00 min/km pace is 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. For mph, divide 60 by your pace in minutes per mile, so 8:03 min/mile is about 7.45 mph.
Eight minutes per mile is 4:58 per km, which is about 12.1 km/h or 7.5 mph. Held for a full race it gives roughly a 1:45 half marathon and a 3:29 marathon.
Most treadmills show km/h or mph, so convert your pace with the calculator above. A 6:00 min/km pace is 10 km/h; a 9:00 min/mile pace is about 6.7 mph. Many runners add a 1% incline to mimic outdoor air resistance.
Holding a pace for a full race distance is what most runners care about, so the results show the finish time for a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon if you run that pace the whole way. For a full set of split times use the marathon splits calculator.
